NHBC (National House-Building Council) is the leading warranty and insurance provider and standards setter for UK house-building for new and newly converted homes.  It is a non-profit distributing company; it reinvests all income in achieving its primary purpose; improving quality in house building to protect homeowners. NHBC started as the National House-Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) in 1936, created to tackle sub-standard building practices following government slum clearances.

NHBRC achieved its aims by establishing an approved house builder register, by inspecting and certifying new houses as fit for purpose, and by influencing legislation. This was underpinned by the first standard construction specification for new homes; the forerunner of the NHBC Standards which protect homeowners today.

Three quarters of a century of experience allows NHBC to shape UK house building. By setting standards and inspecting new homes, and by providing industry feedback and training, NHBC drives continual improvement.

NFB (National Federation of Builders) is the industry’s leading and longest established trade organisation with almost 4,000 member companies nationally.

It has strict membership criteria covering workmanship, financial status, health and safety rules and a Code of Practice to help safeguard customers.

Their website, builders.org.uk gives guidelines on how to choose the right builder and also gives you the contact details for an accredited builder in your area.

The FMB is the largest trade association in the UK. Established over 60 years ago it was setup to serve the interests of small to medium sized building companies. It requires tradesmen to demonstrate standards which it sets for all its members. All members have to prove that they can demonstrate high standards of professionalism, excellent work and business skills. Members who are part of the Federation of Master Builders are obliged not only to satisfy the above criteria initially but must work to a continuous set of standards at all times to remain on the register.

Choosing a builder who’s a member of the FMB means a good start to any building project. The FMB is a trade association that promotes professionalism and high quality workmanship among building companies throughout the United Kingdom.

Only builders and specialists who can comply with the FMB entry criteria are accepted as members. The Federation logo is widely accepted as the hallmark of a building company who takes pride in the quality of their work, and who matches it with an equally well-run business.
